Afghan Uniformed Police (AUP)

AUP is responsible for day-to-to-day activities at the provincial and district levels. AUP responsibilities include maintaining public order and security, preventing and discovering crime, arresting suspects, protecting public and private property, and regulating road traffic.

AUP is organized into six regions, 34 provinces, 365 rural district and 46 urban precincts. 50 to 200 officers per district Regional Command Kabul = 30 districts, 2500 police Regional Command Center Regional Command East = 43 districts. 9000 police Regional Command South = 12000 police (Helmand = 3000) Regional Command West Regional Command North Focused District Training Program (collective training program). Started January 2008.

Critical districts are identified, then all the AUPs are removed and sent for eight weeks of collective training (not individual training) before returning to their districts. While they are gone, they are replaced by ANCOPs. Judges and prosecutors within the FDD districts receive targeted training. Eight districts per cycle are being trained with 6 cycles per year Plan all 365 districts in Afghanistan will be completed by the end of 2012.

The first round of training for the eight worst districts started in January 2008. 65 most critical districts completed the training program by the June2009. These districts are concentrated in the south and east, near the Ring Road..
