ghani_tarekTarek Ghani Tarik Tariq was born 1982 in the US. He is a  s/o  Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and his libanese christian wife Rula who met and married in Lebanon before attending graduate school at Columbia University. His mother was from Lebanon and his father from Afghanistan. His grandfather was Shah Pesand and his grandmother Kawkaba Lodin. His uncle is Hashmat Ghani Ahmadzai.

As an undergraduate at Stanford, Ghani took a year off to serve as special assistant to his father, who had returned to Afghanistan after 9/11 and the defeat of the Taliban to serve as the country’s finance minister. After returning to Stanford, Ghani's experience in Afghanistan with crime, conflict, and corruption and the challenges of building state institutions became his senior thesis subject.

Ghani served as student representative on the finance committee of the university’s board of trustees, was commencement speaker for his class, and won a Truman Scholarship. He graduated in 2004 with a BS in symbolic systems (i.e. cognitive science), with honors in international security studies.

After graduation, Ghani oversaw a US $ million grant budget designed to promote transparency and accountability in Liberia’s government program for the philanthropic organization Humanity United.

PhD student Tarek Ghani was among 30 students from around the country to be selected to receive a Soros New American Fellowship (20100803).

Ghani leads Crisis Group’s analysis of economic issues and oversees the adoption of cutting-edge research methods. As Future of Conflict Program Director, he directs Crisis Group’s work on the Economics of Conflict, Technology & War, and Climate Change & Conflict.(20201108)

Tarek Ghani is an Assistant Professor at the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis. His research examines the development of emerging economies, in particular the impact of competition, finance and technology on market power and institutional weakness. At Olin, Tarek teaches the PMBA core strategy course and PhD-level organisational economics and non-market strategy.

Tarek is an affiliate of the Empirical Studies of Conflict (ESOC) Project and the International Growth Centre (IGC). During 2015-2016, Tarek was the ESOC Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Tarek received his Ph.D. and M.S. from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and B.S. in Symbolic Systems with International Security Honors from Stanford University. From 2006-2009, Tarek oversaw grants on conflict prevention issues at the private foundation Humanity United. He previously worked at the Center for Global Development, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the World Bank.(20180305)
