Ahmad Jan led 4,000 armed men during the jihad against the former Soviet Union. He was a commander of the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA), led by Gulbadin Hekmatyar. Jan said, adding his candidacy for a provincial council seat (2009) had been rejected by the election commission on the ground that he possessed illegal arms. "Today, I registered with the commission to take part in parliamentary vote (2010)". Jan turned in 50 light and heavy weapons and half a tonne of cannon shells and rockets to DIAG officials.
