FeatureTAPI PipelineDelta / CentGas Corridor
Concept & Type Transnational transit pipeline connecting Central and South Asia. National extraction project with a regional domestic pipeline option.
Gas Source Imported gas from the Galkynysh field (Turkmenistan). Domestic extraction from the Kushk-Tirpul basin (Herat/Badghis).
Key Player Consortium led by Turkmengaz & Asian Development Bank. Delta Energy Group (Saudi Arabia).
Estimated Cost Around $10 billion (for the pipeline construction alone). $10 billion (pipeline), up to $50–$60 billion total investment ecosystem.
Project Status (2026) Advanced construction: First gas deliveries to Herat are imminent. Early phase: 25-year contract for exploration and feasibility studies.
Afghanistan's Role Primarily a transit country (generating ~$400 million/year in transit fees). Shifts Afghanistan to an active producer and domestic consumer.

The Geopolitical Reality in 2026

While both pipelines could theoretically coexist and complement each other—converging in the Herat region—they face distinct geopolitical hurdles:

  • TAPI is bottlenecked by borders: While Afghanistan under the Taliban has accelerated construction on its own territory, geopolitical friction blocks its expansion into South Asia. Severe border skirmishes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, coupled with enduring tensions between Pakistan and India, make it highly unlikely the pipeline will expand past Afghanistan anytime soon. For now, TAPI is realistically transforming into a bilateral Turkmen-Afghan regional project.
  • Delta focuses on self-sufficiency: This is where the Saudi Delta project shifts the narrative. By aiming to extract gas directly within Western Afghanistan and transport it via the "CentGas Corridor" to Southern Afghanistan, it reduces the Taliban administration's reliance on volatile transit agreements with neighboring countries.

Summary: TAPI provides the physical infrastructure nearing completion today but is hindered by regional rivalries. The Delta project represents a long-term vision designed to transition Afghanistan from a simple transit hub into a self-reliant energy player.
