Seven police zones created in 2006 for handling and coordinating affairs among police headquarters were abolished on 20130327. The Cabinet took the decision in response a request from the Ministry of Interior. A complete and careful assessment of police personnel in 2012 showed the continuation of the zones was useless and ineffective. Police Zone 707 is still under construction and will not be established.

The decision on abolishing the police zones in Kabul, Jalalabad, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar, Gardez and Herat would be fully enforced during the current year 2013.  Currently, there are 157,000 policemen working under the interior ministry in the 34 provinces of the country.
