Tamadon TV

Taliban raided the headquarters of Tamadon TV, a private broadcaster in Kabul, the network said on Tuesday June 23, 2026, warning that its broadcasts could soon be suspended.

The reason for the raid was not immediately clear. Taliban so far have not commented on the raid.

Tamadon TV was founded in 2007 by the late Shiite cleric and political leader Mohammad Asif Mohseni. Based in Kabul, the network was established with an investment reportedly exceeding $1 million and has long focused on religious, cultural and current affairs programming, particularly for Afghanistan’s Shiite community.

In June 2024, Taliban ordered Tamadon TV’s closure, alleging links to the political party Harakat-e Islami Afghanistan and disputing the ownership status of its premises. Tamadon TV rejected the allegations and later resumed operations. The network has also faced previous Taliban raids and restrictions since they return to power in 2021.

The development comes just days after another television station, Rah-e-Farda TV, resumed broadcasting after receiving a new license from Taliban.

Rah-e-Farda had been forced off the air earlier this year after Taliban intelligence agents suspended its operations. The station was allowed to resume broadcasting only after changes were made to its ownership and management structure.
 

Tamadon TV Network was established by Ayatollah Mohammad Asef Mohseni's endeavors in Kabul in 1386 (2006). They are experimentally broadcasting programs via ABS satellite over Asia and Europe at the moment. The Network is accessible through land transmitter on UHF band and channel 36 in Kabul
.

This network, contrary to other private networks, is refraining from broadcasting music. The programs from the network cover religious issues as well as putting Iranian soap operas like "She was an angle" on the air.

According to its name, and contrary to most of newly born networks, it has not followed any specific political, commercial or promotional objectives, but cultural and religious ones. Compared to other networks, they have better equipment and facilities, that from the start their programs are put on the air via land over Kabul and in the farthest reaches of the world via satellite possessing good studio and technical equipment. The staffs of the network include some refugee students from Iran who have passed specialized courses and returned to Afghanistan, and some are from Kabul University being accepted after a free scientific test and interview. They were sent to Iran to gain technical and specialized trainings, subsequent to passing the required course, have came back to the country and working for Tamadon television.

The Taliban’s Justice Ministry on June 8, 2024 ordered the closure of Tamadon TV due to its alleged affiliation with Harakat-e Islami Afghanistan. The station was founded in 2006 by Ayatollah Asif Mohseni, a prominent Shi’ite cleric and leader of Harakat-e Islami Afghanistan who died in 2019.

Mohammad Jawad Mohseni, the director of Tamadon TV, rejected the Taliban’s claims about the broadcaster’s political affiliations. He said Mohseni had resigned as the leader of Harakat-e Islami in 2005, a year before establishing the station.
