Zibaak district in Badakhshan province fell to Taliban, following heavy clashes on Friday, Apr 28, 2107 morning, local sources said. The group’s seized the district after nine-hour battle with Afghan security forces. (20170428) Government forces had taken "full control" of the Zebak district in Badakhshan Province on May 11, 2017.
 

Taliban Fears Internal Resistance

But many experts believe the Taliban has no intention of initiating or provoking a military conflict with its neighbors.

The reason behind the latest troop developments is that the Taliban is worried about internal resistance to its rule, he said.

Fighting between Taliban forces and armed opponents is continuing in Topkhana area of Zebak district of Badakhshan, 

The fighting in the Topkhana area began around midday on Thursday, July 23, 2026,near the border with Pakistan. Sources had earlier reported that anti-Taliban forces attacked several Taliban posts and that the group sent a large number of reinforcements to the area.

The Taliban deployed commandos by helicopter and sent additional forces overland to the site of the clashes. Sources said some wounded Taliban fighters were flown by helicopter to Faizabad city.

Sources said the Taliban shut down telecommunications towers in the area after opposition forces attacked its positions.
A Taliban-affiliated outlet, that the opposition fighters had allegedly intended to enter Badakhshan from Chitral, Pakistan to carry out destructive activities. Taliban sources also claimed that the fighters had bases in Pakistan’s Chitral region and planned to enter Zebak district of Badakhshan through the Shah Salim route. The route described in Taliban reporting refers to a remote infiltration corridor across the Hindu Kush from Pakistan's Chitral District into Afghanistan's Zebak District (Badakhshan). The most commonly cited crossing is the Shah-e Salim (Shah Salim) route, which has historically been used by smugglers and insurgent groups during the snow-free months. (20260725)
