3. Biodata
Ahmed_Wali_KarzaiAhmad Wali Khan Karzai, son of Abdul Ahad, (born 1961 in Karz, Kandahar, Afghanistan) is the younger brother of Hamid Karzai, president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Abdul Ahad was assassinated in 1999. He his representative for southern Afghanistan in Kandahar.

Ahmad Wali Karzai was chosen as a representative of Kandahar province for the 2002 Loya jirga and also the 2004 Constitutional Loya Jirga. He was elected to the Kandahar Provincial Council in 2005.

Ahmed Wali Karzai had spent much of the mujahideen period in Chicago, where he managed a branch of the family restaurant. But unlike the brothers Qayum and Mahmoud, he left the U.S. in the mid-1990s to join his exiled father and his half-brother Hamid in Quetta, Pakistan. Ahmed Wali’s decision to return to Quetta does much to explain his relationship with Hamid Karzai.

Ahmed Wali had earlier demonstrated loyalty to the family by keeping the lines of communication open with his father when Abdul Ahad was briefly imprisoned by the communist Taraki government in the late 1970s. He demonstrated a similar loyalty in the 1990s by returning to Quetta, but beyond that he also financially supported his brother Hamid, just as Mahmoud, a decade earlier, had funded Hamid’s studies in India. This may have left Hamid indebted to both brothers.

Ahmed Wali is also an elder of the Popalzais, a Pashtun clan. It has been alleged that he is a prominent figure in the drug trade, controlling a significant proportion of Afghan heroin production. Numerous reports link Ahmed Wali Karzai to the drug trade, according to current and former officials from the White House, the State Department and the United States Embassy in Afghanistan, who would speak only on the condition of anonymity. In meetings with President Karzai, including a 2006 session with the United States ambassador, the Central Intelligence Agency’s station chief and their British counterparts, American officials have talked about the allegations in hopes that the president might move his brother out of the country, said several people who took part in or were briefed on the talks. Wali is living in a house belonging to Haji Azizullah Alizai, a notorious drugs trafficker from Helmand, without paying rent. Azizullah has been on the US Treasury's list of Specially Marked Nationals, with whom US citizens are banned from doing business, since June 2007 because of his involvement in the drugs trade.

Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of Afghan president Hamid Karzai, is said to be receiving regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency since 8 years, The New York Times reported on 27.10.2009. The New York Times insists the agency's financial ties to Ahmed Wali Karzai and its working relations with him have created deep divisions within the Obama administration may complicate an already tense relationship with President Hamid Karzai. Karzai helps the CIA operate a paramilitary group, the Kandahar Strike Force, that is used for raids against suspected insurgents and terrorists, according to American officials. Karzai also is paid for allowing the CIA and American Special Operations troops to rent a large compound outside the city, which also is the base of the Kandahar Strike Force, the Times said. Karzai also helps the CIA communicate with and sometimes meet Afghans loyal to the Taliban, the newspaper reported.

Wali Karzai threatens his enemies he will bring them to Guantanamo, if they don't follow his orders. He is very close with the ex Minister of Tribal and Border Affairs, Arif Noorzai. One sister of Noorzai is the wife of Wali Karzai. They married in 2002. Wali Karzai’s militias, the Kandahar Strike Force, implements ‘unorthodox’ tactics, including sometimes posing as Taleban. (From here the rumour of so-called US Taleban originates.)
