Background:

A new cement plant will be built in southern Kandahar province, Ministry of Mines officials said Monday Januar 14, 2013, indicating that the resource-rich province was a good choice for the new development.

Officials said the province's large deposit of raw materials of cement would be attractive to investors interested in the cement business.

Provincial officials welcomed the move saying it will pave the way for more employment and better living standards for scores of Kandahar residents.

"We have big resource of raw cement material in the Shorandam region that, after working on it, will help resolve [Afghanistan's] cement needs," Kandahar Governor Toryalai Wesa said.

Mines Minister Wahidullah Shahrani confirmed that the provincial officials had been lobbying for support for the new plant.

"Previously, we have discussed this with the governor, who told us that they are trying to encourage local investors for making a cement plant there," he said.

Local officials have also asked the Ministry to work on developing coal mines in the Marouf, Miyanshin and Shah Wali Kot districts to drive thermal power sources for the province.(20130114)
