Afghanistan Central Bank Governor Adbul Qadeer Fitrat said on 20110627 in a hotel in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington he has resigned his post because he feared for his life for his role in investigating a scandal surrounding Kabulbank. Waheed Omer, the chief spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, told Reuters in Kabul that Fitrat's name was on a list of people the attorney general's office planned to prosecute over the scandal (20110628).

Fitrat_Abdul_QadirAbdul Qadir Fitrat was born 1963 in Badakhshan Province. He attended primary school in Badakhshan and secondary school in Kabul. He holds a Bachelors degree in Economics from the International Islamic University, Islamabad, Pakistan and a Masters degree in Social and Applied Economics with an emphasis on monetary economics from the Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in the United States. The 38 year-old Abdul Qadeer Fitrat left Afghanistan in 1996 to attend the World Bank's annual meeting, but while travelling through New Delhi, Kabul was overrun by the Taleban.

Mr Fitrat was granted asylum in the US and has since been working as an insurance and carpet salesman in Washington. Abdul Qadeer Fitrat was nominated as Governor of the Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) by the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in early September and was confirmed by the Parliament on November 17, 2007. Governor Fitrat had previously served as First Deputy Governor and Governor of DAB in 1995 and 1996 respectively.

Governor Fitrat also worked as Assistant Research Coordinator for a USAID-supported project, called ESSP in Peshawar, Pakistan, Chairman of Bank–e-Millie Afghan (BMA) in Kabul, Afghanistan in early 1990s and a Consultant for Economist to the International Monetary Fund in Washington in late 1990s. He also served as a consumer banker to the First Union National Bank in Northern Virginia during 2000-2001. Fitrat served as an Advisor to the Executive Director at the World Bank.
