Qarizada ZahrahMrs. Zahra Qarizada has graduated from Rabia Balkhai High School and also studied engineering for two years in Pakistan. She returned from Pakistan in 2001 and got admission in Kabul University to do her masters in literature.

A good qari (one reciting the Quran) should have the ability to recite in a pleasant voice that attracts the audience, says Zuhra Qarizada, a renowned female qari, who started recitation from the holy book at age three.

A resident of the first police district in Kabul, Zahra Qarizada said the best Qari should first know Tajwid (the rules governing pronunciation during recitation of the Quran) so that he/she could recite the book well and attract listeners.

She has memorised 70 verses and loves the Arabic style of recitation, especially of Abul Basit Abdul Samad. A recipient of several awards and having stood first, second, third in Qirat completions between 2002 and 2005, Zuhra has won many gifts like Hijab, scarves, the Tafseer-i-Kabuli book and certificates.

She said before there had been a Quran learning centre at their home, where pupils would learn Quran, Tajwid, recitation, English language, computer and sewing.

Though the centre is no more, yet people continue to visit their home and learn the Quran from her father.

She said it was her father’s wish to see his all children become Qari and now she and her three sisters and four brothers are Qari.

Her two brothers are serving in the army and two brothers are law and literature students in Kabul University. One of her sisters is doctor and one is information director at the Hewad government-run newspaper.

She also knows calligraphy and has taught many students as well. In addition, she knows how to sew and has many times got first, second and third spot in tailoring.

She also writes poems.  In 2004, when the Iranian Embassy in Kabul held a competition, she obtained academic, literary and art awards.

She is the author of 10 books that cover religion, social and cultural issues. The books are Mawjodiat Insan Dar Jahan Az Nazar Quran (The existence of humans in the world from a Quranic perspective), “Rahraw Iman” (Followers of belief), “Qahraman Wafa wa Istiqamat” (A hero of faith and perseverance).

Besides, her articles have been published in newspapers and magazines and her non-published poetry collections include “Namod hai az Adabyat Shifahi Mardum Kabul, “Ashk wa Hasrat” “Qafila-e- Bahar” “Zulmatkada”.

Currently, she works at the Ministry of Information and Culture as head of youth services and foreign relations.
