The formation of a new political party, a coalition of five political groups, village councils and tribal elders, was announced in Kabul on Dec 18, 2011. The new party called "Public Front" sought public trial of war criminals and traitors, said head of the coalition, Mahmud Popal.

He said the front consisted of five political parties, previously known as National Islamic Peace Party, Tribal Peace Party, Afghans' Welfare Party, United Party of Afghanistan and National Islamic Party of Afghanistan, Popal said, adding 17 village councils and several tribal elders were part of the front. He asked the government to provide information to the nation on aid it had received from the international community. He also sought trial of officials involved in misuse of foreign aid.
