Background:
A new district was created 20110306 in eastern Laghman province, in a move to improve the security situation. With a presidential decree, Badpakh has temporarily been given the district's status, Governor Mohammad Iqbal Azizi told a press conference in Mahtarlam. He said President Hamid Karzai approved the creation of the additional district, located 75 kilometres west of Mahtarlam. Badpakh, Garoch, Andror, Shahgilyan, Miakhel and Mir Alikhel areas were far away from the provincial capital and people had numerous problems to come to Mahtarlam to solve their problems, he said. With regard to security, he said that Badpakh was the area from where insurgents launched attacks on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway, in Kapisa province and Sarobi district of Kabul. A district chief would be appointed and a 200-member police force deployed to the town next week, he said.
