Sultanzoy_DaoudMohammad Dawood Dawoud Daoud Sultanzoi (Daud Sultanzoy) was born 13 Sep 1952 in Ghazni Province. He went to Habibia High School in Kabul for studies. Sultanzoy completed his bachelor degree from engineering faculty at Kabul University. Later, he proceeded to the US on government’s scholarship for further studies in aviation field and became pilot. He lived in Saudi Arabia and United States during Soviet Union’s occupation of Afghanistan and worked as captain and trainer in United Airlines. Earlier, Sultanzoy served as an employee of Aryana Airlines for eight years.

Sultanzoy hails from Ghilzay tribe and had left Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion to live for more then 20 years as a long time exile in California, Malibu, USA. He was awarded BA from Miami University 1973. After 11/9 he left his United Airline pilot job, a very lucrative and luxurious job as an international pilot, and went to Afghanistan. He bagged a seat in Wolesi Jirga 2005 and headed the Economic Affairs Committee in the lower house. In the 2005 elections he bagged 3rd most votes in Ghazni Province. He is critical of Hamid Karzais rule (20091108). He was a presidential candidate in the election 2005. Sultanzoi is a moderate reformer and technocrat. Mohammad Daoud Sultanzoi has emerged as the leader of Group e- Mustaqel and as one of the stars of the Wolesi Jirga, having been recently elected Chair of the Economic Committee.
Daoud Sultanzoy has called for an inquiry into the Karzai family businesses, said disillusionment with the political elite and with an election process blighted by allegations of fraud and intimidation runs deep. "Afghans know they could have better government. They are asking why the international community has propped up this kind of leader," he said.(20090807)

A commercial airline pilot by training, Sultanzoi was actively involved in demonstrations against the Soviet invasion, helping some of his fellow countrymen escape to Germany.  When the Taliban fell and Sultanzoi was deciding whether to run for parliament, he recalls his son saying, “You can either watch history pass by or be a part of it.” The decision was easy and Sultanzoi ran for parliament from his home province of Ghanzi. He waged a true grassroots effort, registered 15,400 women to vote, and went to districts that even the government did not dare to go, communicating a simple message: “This is your chance to be heard.” Despite long odds, the message was heard by voters. Sultanzoi: "We are basically creating an apparatus in the bureaucracy that is totally feeding itself from corruption, and feeding others in the NGO community from this corruption. And unless we do something about this, unless we clean up this thing, we will have a banana republic here that we will never be able in our lifetime to fix the things we want to fix." Lawmaker Daoud Sultanzoy, was a college classmate of Hekmatyar's and recalls him as charismatic but rigidly fundamentalist in his religious views.

His wife Zohra Daoud and his daughter Sarah are still living in California. Zohra Daoud, who in 1972 became the first and only person to win the Miss Afghanistan pageant, stays busy with speaking and radio engagements as well as with her involvement in the Afghan Women's Association of Southern California. The organization, which she co-founded, helps build schools and water wells in Afghanistan and donates clothing and school supplies.
