Omarzai_LalLal Mohammad Omarzai Lal Muhammad Umarzai - picture left - (20080915)  has survived a roadside bomb explosion that killed three of his bodyguards and wounded five others. The explosives, apparently hidden in a three-wheel motorcycle near the Shindand district government compound,were remotely detonated as the convoy of the district chief Lal Mohammad Omarzai passed to enter the district headquarters compound. Omarzai's son along with two of his bodyguards were killed in the attack. Omarzai, who was the target of the attack, survived the blast but sustained slight injuries. "Three of my bodyguards, one of them my son, were martyred and five others were wounded," Omarzai said (20080915).

Shindand Mayor:
Abdul Salam Rahimi (20120714) killed in front of his residential house. Provincial council member Mohammad Tariq confirmed the mayor’s death, who had been in the post for the past three years (other sources say one year). Prior to that, he was a district governor. On 13 July 2012, the district mayor Abdul Salam Rahimi was assassinated.

Background:
Shindand District is divided into five bigger districts, namely: Zawol, Zerkoh Zerkhu (Noorzai dominated), Poshteh-Koh, Kooh-Zoor and Qasaba. Shindand District is one of the most diverse and wide districts in Afghanistan, representing thirty different Afghan tribes which include both Tajik and Pashtun groups and sub-groups.In terms of tribal and ethnic groups, Shindand is one of the most diverse districts in Herat Province. Around 60 percent of the population is Pashtun and around 40% percent consists of Tajik Aimaq Hazara (Timuris and other sub-tribes) and some Balochi people. However, sixty percent of Tajiks live within the city of Shindand, which includes Qasaba and surrounding districts.
