shahrani_wahidullahShahrani is the son of former Minister of  Hajj and Islamic Affairs, Prof. Nematullah Shahrani, Sharani, Usbek, (Badakhshan), Wahidullah Shahrani was born in Kabul in 1973. He holds a post-graduate degree in money and banking from the U.K. and a post-graduate degree in economics from Pakistan. While residing in the U.K., he lectured in economics at Waltham Forest College and business and economics at Richmond College. Meanwhile, Shahrani also worked in currency trading with Thomas Cook, U.K. Immediately prior to assuming the role of Deputy Minister of Finance in January 2005, Shahrani served as the First Deputy Governor of the central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank. In that position Shahrani was principally responsible for the areas of budget, procurement, treasury and fiscal affairs.

In late December 2008, Mr. Wahidullah Shahrani assumed the role of Minister of Commerce and Industry. He is principally responsible for the areas of trade, industry, investment, export promotion and the overall private sector development. Until Jan 2005 – Dec 2008 he served as the Advisor to the President of Afghanistan on Finance as well as the Deputy Minister for Finance (Ministry of Finance). In those capacities, he was responsible for a wide array of intricate and high-level policy matters. Shahrani was a key interlocutor for the international financial institutions and bilateral donors.

He was the Alternate Governor for the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the World Bank. While residing in U.K., he served as lecturer in Economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Richmond Upon Thames College, Kingston University for two years.

The mining ministry was reported to be thoroughly corrupt at the time of his appointment. Since then Shahrani has made a number of changes, including an increase in the number of computers at the ministry and the online publication of all mining contracts. Whereas previously the mining ministry saw a role for itself in the actual work of mining, he has envisioned the ministry more as a regulator.
 

In late 2010 reports indicated that he was under investigation by the inspection division (led by deputy attorney general Rahmatullah Nazari) for accepting bribes, though he denied all such charges, and agreed that it might have something to do with his arguments in favor of shutting down the division. Overall, he is said to seen as a "reformer" by Western authorities. Sharani is also associated with Marshal Fahim.

 

Wahidullah Shahrani, former minister of mines and petroleum will be trialed by anti-corruption court, a source in the Supreme Court said. The minister is accused of corruption and misuse of authority, said Jamshed Rasooli, a spokesman for Attorney General’s Office. He said that investigation of the official had been completed and that his dossier had been sent to the special court.(20190203)

Wahidullah Shahrani, former minister of mines and petroleum, is fined $1.5 million and was sentenced to 13 months in jail on Saturday Januar 03, 2021. He was accused of misusing his authority for awarding contracts to a cement factory in Herat and dealt in a coal mine contract in the Sang-e-Pahlawanan district of Herat province.(20210301)
