sabawoon_wahidullahWahidullah Sabawoon was the Northern Alliance's finance minister and former HIG Intelligence Chief. He did not really brake with Hekmatyar in 1996. Sabawoon is an islamic fundamentalist. He, like Northern Alliance leader Rabbani, was pushed aside at the UN conference in Bonn in 2001 December that installed Karzai.

In the Bonn talks, Sabawoon lost the Finance Ministry to a supporter of the deposed King Zaher Shah, Hedayat Amin Arsala. In 2003 Karzai appointed Wahidullah Sabawoon, as presidential adviser, to have him under control. In May 2009 Sabawoon was nominated Head of a a commission to find a viable solution to the problem of access to grazing lands and land ownership disputes to prevent future clashes between Koochi kuchi nomads and settlers.

Sabawoon, as former Kabul police chief General Din Mohammad Jurat claimed, was Hekmatyar’s son-in-law, which is unconfirmed. He has served as Hizb-e-Islami’s military director and general director of intelligence. Waheedullah Sabawoon was among eight people wounded in a blast in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province. Presidential advisor on tribal affairs, Wahidullah Sabawoon who was seriously injured in an August 2, 2010 bomb blast in eastern Nangarhar province, had returned home from Turkey after two months of rest. Sabawoon was seriously wounded in the explosion targeting his motorcade in front of the Mian Omar High School in Jalalabad on August 2. He and five others were airlifted by a helicopter to a Kabul Hospital for medical treatment. Later, he travelled to Turkey where he spent 55 days. He said he had suffered deep wounds and was still unable to move without support.(20101007)

Hizb-e Mutahed Islami Afghanistan (United Islamic Party of Afghanistan)
Leader: Wahidullah Sabawoon Postal Address: Jamal Mena, Kar-e Sakhi, Khayaban-e Markazi, Ziarat Sakhi, Kabul, Afghanistan Telephone: 070196338

Background:
In Kabul, police and NDS, then controlled by Shura-ye Nizar arrested scores of members of their old rivals Hezb-e Islami. Wahidullah Sabawun (now one of the president’s advisors on tribal affairs and leader of the legal, registered party) was detained, as were Juma Khan Hamdard and Delbar Jan Arman (now governors of Paktia and Kunar, respectively) and the late Bashir Baghlani (who went on to become governor of Farah). A defence ministry official accused the four men of having been sent by Hekmatyar to sabotage the new government, but it was clear this was just a blatant attempt to settle old scores. The Hezb-e Islami cadres got out fairly swiftly after media reporting and the party slowly managed to rehabilitate itself and gradually found its place in the new administration, eventually also making its way into parliament.
