Brig. Gen. Malham Pohanyar, commander of 4th border police brigade was arrested almost three months ago (May 2010) in western Herat province on the charge of having links with narcotics dealers, taking bribes and misusing his authority. After hearing both from the public prosecutor and the defence on Monday, Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF), a special court for accused of involvement in narcotic trade, decided to adjourn the trial until 20100803. At 20100803 hearing, the judge convicted Malham of 10 years in prison and fined $14, 000 after finding him guilty of the charges. The prosecutor had accused Malham of having ties with drug smugglers, taking bribes and misusing his authority. His defence lawyer rejected the charges against his client, saying Malham has been active in stemming drug trafficking in the province which was why he had accused in this case.
