Mangal was the fourth governor of Helmand of Karzai's six year government after Mulla Sher Muhammad Akhunzada, Engineer Muhammad Daud and Asadullah Wafa. Mohammad Golab Mangal (also Gulab) is an Afghan politician, who has held a number of governorships over provinces since the 2001 invasion. He is said to be "one of the most accomplished governors to have served Afghanistan since 2001". Others say he is corrupt. In May 2008, while flying into Musa Qala with a British escort to dedicate a new mosque, the CH-47 helicopter in which he was flying was hit by rocket fire.
Mangal was sacked for “political reasons,” according to a senior official in Mr. Karzai’s office. “He had lots of unnecessary relations, close relations with the foreigners which the president didn’t like. He was suspected to be involved in corruption,” the official said, on condition of anonymity.(20120920) Mangal was confirmed als Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs by Wolesi Jirga. (20150418)

About 25 civil society activists and political workers coming all the way from Nangarhar told a press conference in Kabul that crimes from kidnappings to murders, corruption, land grabbing, mafia groups and others had peaked under Mohammad Gulab Mangal as the Nangarhar governor. The provincial government’s campaigns against corruption, land grabbing and insecurity had threatened the interests of some mafia groups who wanted to defame the governor.(20170517)
